Impeaching Biden Now is a Bad Idea

Created: JANUARY 18, 2025

While some House Republicans may feel the urge to impeach President Biden, it's a strategically flawed approach. Impeachment without thorough preparation, comprehensive hearings, a firm grasp of the facts, and public support will hinder Republican efforts to lead the country effectively.

First, such an attempt is destined to fail. Initiating battles you can't win is politically unwise. The Republican majority in 1994 crumbled partly because too many Republicans prioritized narrow ideological issues over practical governance, losing their seats and handing control to Nancy Pelosi.

Second, a disorganized impeachment effort plays directly into the Democrats' and media's hands. It provides them ammunition to discredit positive initiatives from the Republican-led House, portraying the GOP majority as negative, divisive, and purely political. The media will amplify this narrative, overshadowing Republican efforts to improve American lives.

Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene announces impeachment articles against President Biden: 'Unfit to serve'

We've witnessed this scenario before. Democrats spent years relentlessly attacking President Trump, even staging orchestrated impeachment hearings. The public grew weary of this partisan warfare and voted them out. Americans prioritize economic relief, job creation, and fiscal responsibility – the reasons they elected a Republican House majority. Replicating a failed Democratic strategy makes little sense.

Many Republican representatives seek advice on their 2024 strategy. My recommendation is to define success for 2023 first. Without short-term goals, they risk getting bogged down in Washington's political games, like a hasty impeachment effort. By 2024, they may find themselves busy but without substantial achievements.

House Republicans should prioritize listening to the American people and acting on their concerns. Every Republican proposal should ideally have around 70% public approval. This is the approach Speaker McCarthy employed during the debt ceiling negotiations, and it's a model the entire Republican conference should embrace.

Having led an impeachment fight myself, I understand the enthusiasm of some House GOP members. However, proceeding without meticulous preparation, a compelling case, a clear message, and public support would be highly detrimental.
