During a seemingly lighthearted halftime show at a Miami Heat game, UFC star Conor McGregor's promotional appearance for his TIDL Sport body spray took an unexpected turn. The 34-year-old fighter was courtside for Game 4 of the NBA Finals between the Heat and the Denver Nuggets when he participated in a bit with Burnie, the Heat's mascot.
The staged encounter involved McGregor throwing a left hook at the mascot, who was wearing boxing gloves. However, McGregor's punch sent Burnie to the floor, and he followed up with another blow while the mascot was down. Burnie was then escorted off the court by the Heat's entertainment crew.
What was intended as entertainment resulted in the man portraying Burnie needing hospitalization and pain medication, according to The Athletic. He has since been released. McGregor's actions drew boos from the Miami crowd even before the punch landed, further exacerbating the negative reaction to the incident.
This incident comes as McGregor prepares to return to the UFC to fight Michael Chandler later this year, his first fight since suffering a leg break against Dustin Poirier.
The Heat ultimately lost Game 4 to the Nuggets, putting them down three games to one in the series.
