Australian Broadcasting Chair Criticizes Joe Rogan's Influence

Created: JANUARY 25, 2025

Kim Williams, chairman of the Australian Broadcasting Corporation (ABC), recently expressed strong criticism of Joe Rogan's podcast, arguing that Rogan exploits public vulnerabilities like fear and anxiety. Williams, speaking at the Australian National Press Club, stated that he doesn't listen to "The Joe Rogan Experience" but believes Rogan promotes conspiratorial thinking and unrealistic outcomes. He characterized Rogan's influence as "remarkable" and "deeply repulsive," suggesting Rogan views his audience as exploitable. Rogan responded to Williams' comments with a succinct "LOL WUT" on X (formerly Twitter).

This criticism comes after the recent presidential election, which highlighted the significant reach of independent podcasters like Rogan. The influence of such platforms became a talking point, particularly after Vice President Kamala Harris's decision not to appear on Rogan's show, a move widely viewed as a missed opportunity. Rogan, who has expressed both liberal and conservative viewpoints over the years, endorsed Donald Trump shortly before the election. This endorsement, coupled with the perceived impact of podcasters on the election results, has led some media figures to call for the Democratic Party to develop its own influential podcast platform.

Joe Rogan makes a face

Rogan himself has acknowledged this discussion, mentioning the frequent calls for a "Democratic Joe Rogan." He pointed out that he once aligned with their views, but now they are seeking to replicate his platform. He also discussed Vice President Harris's appearances on various other podcasts, suggesting they likely had some impact, but that the Democrats are now recognizing the need for a platform with similar reach to his own.
