Mayfield's time with the Rams began in December 2022 when he was claimed off waivers after a challenging period with the Carolina Panthers. He described his experience in Los Angeles as a much-needed "reset button." Playing under Sean McVay and stepping in for an injured Matthew Stafford, Mayfield found renewed enjoyment and success, throwing for 850 yards in five appearances. He credits the Rams' system and coaching staff for revitalizing his love for the game.

Mayfield's early career success with the Cleveland Browns, including leading them to a playoff victory in 2020, was followed by a difficult 2021 season hampered by a torn labrum. Surgery and the subsequent arrival of Deshaun Watson led to his trade to the Panthers in July 2022. However, his time in Carolina proved unsuccessful, leading to his release and the eventual move to Los Angeles.

Now in Tampa Bay, Mayfield is embracing the opportunity for a fresh start. He's drawn to the Buccaneers' offensive system, which he sees as similar to the Rams', and he's eager to compete for the starting quarterback role. Mayfield expressed excitement and optimism about his future, using the word "revitalized" to describe his current mindset.
