Beef Tallow Recall Resolved: Lady May Tallow Resumes Sales After Labeling Issue

Created: JANUARY 24, 2025

Following a temporary recall due to a labeling discrepancy, Lady May Tallow, a Mississippi-based company specializing in beef tallow products, has announced the resumption of sales for its cooking tallow. The recall, initiated in February 2025, affected over 30,000 pounds of the company's 24 oz. beef tallow product sold nationwide.

The issue stemmed from an incorrect label on the cooking tallow, which prompted a voluntary recall by the manufacturer, Common Sense Soap, to rectify the problem. While the product itself remained safe for consumption, the labeling did not meet regulatory standards. Lady May Tallow owner and founder, Chris McDonald, confirmed that the labeling has been updated and sales recommenced on February 14th.

The recall specifically pertained to the 24 oz. cooking tallow sold between October 16, 2024, and February 6, 2025. Customers who purchased the affected product during this period are advised to discard it. However, Lady May Tallow is offering replacements to those who submit a photo of the recalled product and their receipt.

The USDA's Food Safety and Inspection Service (FSIS) highlighted that Common Sense Soap, the manufacturer, lacked the necessary federal inspection grant to produce food products. The FSIS discovered the labeling issue after being alerted by a local health department. Although the tallow included nutritional information, suggesting it was safe to eat, the lack of proper inspection raised concerns. Fortunately, no adverse reactions related to the recalled tallow were reported.

Lady May Tallow has expressed its commitment to learning from this experience and ensuring full compliance in the future. The company appreciates the understanding and continued support of its customers throughout this process.
