FBI Knew Hunter Biden Laptop Was Real, Yet Fueled Disinformation Narrative, House Judiciary Reveals

Created: JANUARY 24, 2025

A recent House Judiciary Committee investigation has uncovered that the FBI, despite possessing Hunter Biden's laptop and verifying its authenticity, actively contributed to the spread of disinformation surrounding it during the 2020 election. Testimony from Laura Dehmlow, Section Chief of the FBI’s Foreign Influence Task Force, revealed that the bureau deliberately avoided answering social media companies' questions about the laptop's legitimacy, effectively leading them to believe it was Russian disinformation.

This revelation comes after earlier reports indicating that the FBI had confirmed the laptop's authenticity as early as November 2019. Whistleblowers have also stated that investigators recognized the laptop's potential evidentiary value in an ongoing federal investigation concerning Hunter Biden. Despite this knowledge, the FBI engaged in over 30 meetings with social media platforms in the months leading up to the 2020 election, often discussing “Hack/Leak Concerns,” as documented in meeting agendas.

Dehmlow's testimony confirms that key FBI personnel, including those within the Foreign Influence Task Force, were aware of the laptop's authenticity by October 14, 2020, the same day the New York Post published its initial story. However, during a meeting with Twitter that day, an FBI lawyer intervened when an analyst attempted to confirm the laptop's validity, stating the FBI had “no further comment.”

This deliberate silence continued in subsequent meetings with other social media platforms, effectively perpetuating the narrative that the laptop's contents were unreliable. Dehmlow testified that this “no comment” strategy was a deliberate decision made within the FBI, though she declined to identify the individual responsible.

FBI Director Christopher Wray testifies during the House Judiciary Committee hearing titled "Oversight of the Federal Bureau of Investigation," in the Rayburn Building in Washington, D.C., on July 12, 2023.

This revelation raises serious questions about the FBI's role in influencing the public's perception of the Hunter Biden laptop story during a crucial election period. The House Judiciary Committee continues to investigate these actions and their potential impact.
