Calgary Black Lives Matter Leader Faces Hate Crime Charges

Created: JANUARY 21, 2025

Adora Nwofor, the head of Calgary's Black Lives Matter chapter (BLM YYC), is facing hate crime charges related to an incident at St. Thomas Aquinas School on May 26th. Court documents indicate Nwofor is accused of obstructing access to the Catholic school due to "bias, prejudice, or hate based on race or ethnic origin." The 47-year-old abortion activist was released on bail with conditions including no contact with school staff and a 100-meter exclusion zone around the school. Nwofor's lawyer has not yet responded to requests for comment. This incident comes as BLM faces scrutiny, with donations reportedly plummeting and questions arising about executive compensation.

In a separate case, another Calgary BLM activist, Taylor McNallie, is awaiting a verdict on assault charges related to a 2021 incident outside the Calgary Courts Centre. McNallie allegedly assaulted an off-duty sheriff with a megaphone during a protest. She also faces charges for allegedly damaging a photographer's equipment a week prior. A verdict in McNallie's case is expected soon.
