Chargers' Playoff Hopes Dashed by Herbert's Interceptions and Historic Texans Play

Created: JANUARY 26, 2025

In a stunning upset, the Los Angeles Chargers' playoff journey ended abruptly with a 32-12 loss to the Houston Texans on Saturday. Quarterback Justin Herbert, who threw a mere three interceptions during the regular season, had a disastrous performance, throwing four interceptions and completing just 14 of 32 attempts.

This marked Herbert's second consecutive playoff defeat, adding another chapter of disappointment following the team's historic collapse against the Jacksonville Jaguars in the 2022 wild-card round. His performance drew heavy criticism across social media.

The game also witnessed a unique moment in NFL playoff history. Houston's D'Angelo Ross scored two points by returning a blocked extra point in the fourth quarter – a first in postseason history. This occurred after Ladd McConkey's 86-yard touchdown reception. Cameron Dicker's extra point attempt was blocked by Denico Autry, bounced off Dicker's hands, and was scooped up by Ross for the score, extending Houston's lead to 25-12.

The NFL implemented the two-point return rule for blocked extra points in 2015. Previously, such plays resulted in a dead ball. According to Sportradar, this was the ninth instance of an extra point returned for a score since the rule change, with the most recent occurrence during the regular season when the Eagles achieved it against Tampa Bay on September 29, 2024.

This loss marks the Chargers' sixth consecutive season without a playoff victory. Their last postseason win dates back to 2018, with Phillip Rivers at the helm, when they defeated the Baltimore Ravens in a wild-card matchup. Conversely, the Texans secured their second straight playoff win, spearheaded by quarterback C.J. Stroud and coach DeMeco Ryans.
