A LATAM Airlines flight experienced a heart-stopping moment upon landing at Florianopolis-Hercilio Luz International Airport in Brazil. Amidst wet conditions, the Airbus 321, arriving from Sao Paulo, veered off the runway and partially plunged through the hard shoulder. Captured on video, the incident shows the plane tilting sideways and sliding towards the grassy area adjacent to the runway as reverse thrusters engaged.
Onboard passengers could be heard reacting with alarm as the plane's right side broke through the hard shoulder, momentarily trapping one of the landing wheels. The softer material of the shoulder area eventually allowed the plane to come to a complete stop after the front wheel reached the grassy verge.
Emergency services promptly arrived at the scene. Thankfully, all 172 passengers and 7 crew members disembarked safely using mobile staircases and were assessed by medical personnel. No injuries were reported. LATAM Airlines Brazil issued a statement confirming the safe disembarkation and medical evaluation of everyone on board.
The video footage shows passengers calmly exiting the aircraft under the watchful eye of emergency responders. This incident highlights the challenges posed by adverse weather conditions during landing.
