Created: JANUARY 21, 2025

Former Netherlands national team player Quincy Promes has been handed an 18-month prison sentence for stabbing his cousin in the leg. The Amsterdam District Court delivered the verdict on Monday, noting that the typical sentence for such a crime would be one year. However, the court increased the penalty due to Promes' status as a professional athlete and public figure, emphasizing the importance of setting a positive example.

Promes, who currently plays for Spartak Moscow, was absent from the courtroom during the sentencing. While the court's official summary withheld Promes' name in accordance with Dutch privacy regulations, the case has been widely covered by media outlets in the Netherlands. The incident occurred at a family gathering in July 2020 near Amsterdam. Authorities became aware of the stabbing through phone taps related to a separate drug smuggling investigation involving Promes.
