San Diego State Women's Volleyball Team Confirms Participation in Mountain West Tournament Despite Transgender Athlete Controversy

Created: JANUARY 25, 2025

The San Diego State women's volleyball team has publicly affirmed its commitment to competing in the Mountain West Tournament final, even with the potential of facing San Jose State and their transgender athlete, Blaire Fleming. This announcement follows Boise State's forfeiture of their semifinal match against San Jose State due to the ongoing national debate surrounding transgender athletes in sports.

San Diego State is slated to play against top-seeded Colorado State in the semifinals. Should they win, they will advance to the championship game against San Jose State in Las Vegas. In a statement, the team emphasized their dedication to the sport and their pursuit of the Mountain West title, clarifying that their decision to play is solely driven by their love for volleyball and not intended as a political statement.

The team has also opted out of media interactions during the tournament. San Diego State has previously played San Jose State twice this season, winning both matches in straight sets, despite Fleming leading in kills for both games.

Several other teams, including Boise State (twice), Wyoming (twice), Utah State, and Nevada, forfeited their regular season matches against San Jose State. These forfeits resulted in six added wins for San Jose State, securing them the second seed in the tournament.

A federal judge recently ruled against a motion to prevent Fleming from participating in the tournament. This lawsuit, filed by a group of female athletes including San Jose State's co-captain Brooke Slusser, alleges violations of Title IX and First Amendment rights. Slusser previously expressed concerns about the potential for further forfeits impacting her team's focus.
