Chicago White Sox designated hitter Eloy Jimenez had an unusual strikeout during Sunday's game against the St. Louis Cardinals. In the bottom of the second inning, with a 0-2 count, Jimenez attempted to call a timeout as Cardinals pitcher Steven Matz was in his windup. The timeout wasn't granted, Matz delivered a curveball, and the umpire called strike three.
Jimenez appeared to express his frustration to the umpire, seemingly arguing that the umpire's attention should have been on the pitch. The strikeout was part of an 0-for-4 performance for Jimenez, which included three strikeouts. The Cardinals ultimately defeated the White Sox 4-3 in 10 innings.
Matz, making his first start since May 24 after being moved to the bullpen due to struggles, pitched 5 1/3 innings. He allowed one unearned run on two hits while striking out nine batters, lowering his ERA to 4.65. Cardinals manager Oli Marmol praised Matz's performance, noting his determination and focus.
For the White Sox, Lucas Giolito pitched seven innings, allowing two runs on a home run by Willson Contreras.
