Peter Burgelis, Milwaukee County's first openly LGBTQ+ supervisor, reported being assaulted at Mayfair Mall earlier this week. According to Wauwatosa police, the incident occurred following a disagreement in the mall's parking lot on Monday. Burgelis stated that the assailant used a homophobic slur before striking him in the face. The suspect fled the scene before law enforcement arrived, but police have identified a person of interest.

Following the attack, Burgelis sought medical attention and is scheduled for jaw surgery. In a statement, Burgelis expressed his determination not to be silenced by this act of violence and emphasized the importance of continuing to advocate for acceptance and equality for the LGBTQ+ community. He further stated that this incident underscores the ongoing challenges faced by the LGBTQ+ community.
