Six Persian cats in Tampa, Florida, have inherited a substantial sum following the passing of their owner, Nancy Sauer. The felines, named Midnight, Snowball, Goldfinger, Leo, Squeaky, Cleopatra, and originally Napoleon (since adopted), were bequeathed over $300,000 for their ongoing care. This unusual inheritance has led to a flurry of adoption applications at the Humane Society of Tampa Bay, where the cats are currently residing.

Sherry Silk, the executive director, reported receiving over 150 applications for the remaining six. The funds are designated for the cats' well-being, covering expenses like food, grooming, medical care, toys, and treats. Sauer, who passed away in November at age 84, stipulated in her will that the cats should remain in her home until the last one passed. However, seven months later, a probate judge determined that the appointed caretakers were not adequately caring for the animals, prompting the Humane Society's intervention.

Silk emphasized that these are not standard adoptions, as they remain under court jurisdiction, requiring regular reports on expenditures and adoptions. While the cats were accustomed to a luxurious lifestyle in Sauer's million-dollar South Tampa home, they now reside together in a community cat room with access to an outdoor lanai at the shelter. Silk is diligently reviewing applications to find suitable homes that align with the cats' unique personalities. She noted that they are not particularly affectionate, preferring a quiet environment and brushing over cuddling.

The executor of Sauer’s estate revealed that while shopping was a significant interest for her, her cats were her primary focus. He shared anecdotes about Sauer's eccentric personality and love for collecting items she enjoyed. Silk highlighted that Sauer’s greatest fear was her cats’ potential loneliness after her passing, driving the shelter's commitment to finding them appropriate homes. Potential adopters will be required to sign a legal agreement ensuring the cats' return to the shelter if their circumstances change. Silk hopes this story encourages people to create plans for their pets’ care and consider adopting from shelters, which are filled with animals needing homes.
