Anthony Womack, the 24-year-old owner of What's the Scoop ice cream shop in San Francisco, experienced a devastating double burglary one morning, leaving him with significant financial losses and emotional turmoil. Security cameras captured the incidents: first, a pair of thieves stole the cash register and other equipment, leaving the door ajar. Later, another individual entered the shop and pilfered supplies and ice cream, even scooping some with their bare hands.
The estimated cost of the damage and stolen goods ranges from $15,000 to $20,000, a substantial burden for a small business owner. However, Womack has found support within the community. He expressed gratitude for the assistance he's received from Bayview residents, the broader San Francisco community, and Mayor London Breed, who has facilitated grant funding for affected businesses.
The initial burglary occurred before 10:45 a.m. on a Friday, and the thieves spent approximately 40 minutes inside the shop. The stolen cash register held around $500, while the second thief made off with roughly $2,000 worth of equipment and supplies. Adding to the financial strain, Womack had to discard over 20 gallons of ice cream due to potential contamination.
Womack, who opened the shop last November with the intention of giving back to his community, expressed doubt about his decision in light of the burglaries. He serves a neighborhood with a nearby school and baseball field, and the ice cream shop was meant to be a positive addition to the area. The incidents have left him questioning the viability of his business in the current environment.
While the police investigation is ongoing, Womack believes he has identified one of the suspects as a neighbor who lives above the shop. With community support, he has gathered footage and addresses, hoping to aid law enforcement in apprehending all those involved. Despite the setbacks, Womack plans to reopen his business after cleaning up the damage caused by the burglaries.
