A young childcare worker has found a unique way to balance her career with her passion for travel. Lauren Kirby, 21, has embarked on 30 "micro-retirements," exploring numerous countries and immersing herself in different cultures. Since starting work at 18, Kirby has saved over $12,500, allowing her to visit destinations like Portugal, Mexico, Estonia, the U.S., and even live in Australia for six months.

These short breaks from work, a growing trend among Gen Z professionals, have not only broadened her horizons but also enhanced her childcare skills. Kirby explains that by observing childcare practices in different cultures, such as year-round outdoor activities for children, she's gained valuable insights that she now incorporates into her own work.

Kirby's first micro-retirement at 18 was a transformative experience. A TikTok ad led her to a childcare position in Corfu, Greece, for three months. With covered expenses and a modest salary, she saved $3,130, which funded subsequent trips to Portugal, Finland, and Mexico.

In 2023, she transitioned to a part-time nursery job closer to home, strategically using her saved leave time and long weekends to explore 26 more countries. A significant portion of her savings, $5,000, went towards a six-month adventure in Australia, where she worked for five months and then traveled for one.

The COVID-19 lockdowns were a catalyst for Kirby's travel philosophy. Witnessing the swift border closures instilled a sense of urgency, reinforcing the idea that circumstances can change rapidly. This realization solidified her commitment to maximizing her travel opportunities while she can.

Kirby believes that her generation is more aware of the possibilities of temporary work abroad and is actively embracing these opportunities. Her travels have not only enriched her personal life but have also provided valuable professional development, allowing her to introduce new childcare approaches inspired by her international experiences.
