Former President Donald Trump reacted to the Georgia Court of Appeals' decision to disqualify Fulton County District Attorney Fani Willis and her team from prosecuting him and his co-defendants in the election interference case. In an exclusive statement to Fox News Digital, Trump declared the case "entirely dead" and called for an apology to all involved.
Trump criticized the case as a "disgrace to justice," alleging it originated as a politically motivated attack by the Biden Department of Justice. He further accused Willis of financial impropriety, citing alleged misuse of funds and trips taken with a former special prosecutor on her team, Nathan Wade.
The former president questioned the possibility of the case proceeding under new leadership, given its allegedly corrupt origins. He reiterated his accusations against Willis and Wade, claiming their relationship resulted in financial benefits for both parties through vacations funded by legal fees related to the case.
Trump's spokesman and incoming White House communications director, Steven Cheung, echoed the sentiment, calling for an end to the "political weaponization" of the justice system and the dismissal of all investigations against Trump. Cheung expressed optimism about uniting the country under Trump's leadership.
The Georgia Court of Appeals ruled that Willis and her office were disqualified due to an "appearance of impropriety," stating that no other remedy would suffice to restore public confidence. The court's decision emphasized that Willis' pretrial discretion in deciding whom to prosecute and what charges to bring contributed to this perception. As a result, the assistant district attorneys also lost their authority to proceed.
Willis had charged Trump with various offenses, including violation of the Georgia RICO Act, criminal solicitation, criminal conspiracy, filing false documents, and making false statements, related to his alleged attempts to overturn the 2020 election results in Georgia. Trump had pleaded not guilty to all charges.
