In a groundbreaking moment for the NFL, Jacksonville Jaguars assistant strength and conditioning coach Kevin Maxen has publicly announced he is gay. This makes him the first openly gay male coach in the league's history, and a milestone for men's professional sports in the United States.
Maxen, who joined the Jaguars last season, shared his story with Outsports, citing his desire to live openly with his boyfriend of two years, Nick, as a key factor in his decision. He expressed his hope to live authentically without fear of judgment and to support others in doing the same.

Maxen emphasized the importance of his support network, including family, friends, and colleagues, in giving him the strength to come out. He expressed his hope that sharing his experience will empower others to embrace their true selves.
Marcus Pollard, Jacksonville's director of player development, commended Maxen's dedication and work ethic, highlighting the privilege of working with him. Former Jaguars center Brandon Linder also voiced his support, praising Maxen's positive impact both on and off the field.

Maxen's journey began with strength and conditioning roles at Baylor and Vanderbilt before joining the Jaguars. He focuses on developing workout plans for the team's linemen, monitoring their progress and tailoring exercises to their individual needs.

Maxen's announcement follows Carl Nassib's historic coming out as the NFL's first openly gay active player in 2021. Katie Sowers also made history as the first openly gay coach in a Super Bowl in 2020.
