The footage, shared by political commentator Richie Greenberg, reveals the extent of the security measures implemented at the 16th Street and Geary Boulevard location.

Thick chains and multiple locks secure the freezer doors, restricting access to frozen meals. Aisles containing items like cosmetics, personal care products, and over-the-counter medications are enclosed behind plexiglass and glass cabinets, requiring customers to seek assistance from employees to purchase these goods. Store workers have reportedly stated that shoplifters target the store approximately 20 times a day, consistently clearing out pizza and ice cream each night.

Greenberg, who lives near the affected Walgreens, described the neighborhood's decline, citing increased graffiti, homelessness, and drug use. He expressed frustration with the inconvenience of waiting for employees to unlock products and witnessing shoplifters leaving the store with stolen goods. He also criticized San Francisco officials for their perceived inaction on the issue. Greenberg shared his disappointment with having to wait for staff to unlock various sections of the store and recounted witnessing brazen theft firsthand. He lamented the impact on the community and expressed his frustration with city officials.

This incident follows reports that several Walgreens locations have closed in San Francisco due to organized retail crime. In 2021, Walgreens spokesperson Phil Caruso acknowledged the challenges posed by retail theft, revealing that theft rates in San Francisco were significantly higher than the chain average. Critics have pointed to California laws, which categorize thefts under $950 as misdemeanors, as potentially contributing to the problem.
