Ibram X. Kendi, the founding director of the Center for Antiracist Research at Boston University, is leaving the institution for Howard University. Consequently, the BU Center for Antiracist Research will close its doors on June 30, 2025, when its current contract expires.
Kendi expressed pride in the center's accomplishments, highlighting the community built and the individuals impacted. He acknowledged the challenges faced by the organization, particularly the backlash against critical race theory, but emphasized the center's commitment to creating a more equitable society. The center’s staff will continue to be employed by BU until the closing date and will receive support during their transition to new opportunities.

Boston University's press release noted the center's establishment followed the tragic death of George Floyd and the subsequent surge in activism surrounding racial justice. This heightened awareness facilitated fundraising and research opportunities for the center during its initial years. The university also highlighted the center's diverse contributions, including the creation of the COVID Racial Data Tracker, the development of an Antiracist Tech Initiative, support for antiracist curriculum development, the establishment of a Racial Data Lab, the convening of experts, the production of policy reports and public comments, the fostering of faculty networks, the launch of a national book festival, and the creation of the digital platform, “The Emancipator.”

Kendi's move to Howard University, a prominent historically Black institution, will involve the establishment of a new institute focused on the global African diaspora.

Boston University expressed gratitude for Kendi's and the center’s contributions to scholarship, teaching, and policymaking, and extended well wishes for his future endeavors.
