Chiles' initial bronze medal win was followed by controversy. Her score was upgraded after a review requested by the US team, pushing her onto the podium and creating the first all-Black podium in Olympic gymnastics history. However, the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) later rescinded the medal, citing a missed deadline for the US appeal. Chiles and her team maintain that the appeal was timely and are pursuing further legal action, including an appeal to the Swiss Federal Supreme Court, alleging procedural irregularities and a conflict of interest within the CAS panel.

Chiles has been vocal about the emotional impact of the situation, suggesting that the controversy extends beyond the medal itself. In a recent interview, she linked the incident to her race, stating that it reflects broader challenges she's faced as a Black athlete. She also previously cited racially charged attacks on social media following the initial bronze medal win.

The controversy has drawn criticism of the judging process and the International Gymnastics Federation (FIG). The CAS and the US Olympic and Paralympic Committee (USOPC) have issued a joint statement expressing concerns about the handling of the situation and urging the FIG to implement changes to prevent similar incidents in the future.
