Kohberger Investigated in Prior Home Invasion Case with Striking Similarities to Idaho Murders

Created: JANUARY 26, 2025

Authorities have revealed that Bryan Kohberger, the suspect accused of killing four University of Idaho students, was previously investigated for a home invasion in a nearby town just over a year before the tragic murders. Newly surfaced bodycam footage shows police responding to the October 2021 incident in Pullman, Washington, where a woman reported a masked intruder with a knife entering her bedroom. The suspect fled after she fought back. While the details of this incident and the Idaho murders share similarities, including the use of a knife, a masked intruder, and a silent escape, Pullman police have confirmed that Kohberger is no longer a person of interest in the unsolved break-in case. The victim's description of the intruder's height doesn't match Kohberger's, and he wasn't enrolled at Washington State University at the time. This revelation comes as Kohberger awaits trial for the November 2022 murders of Madison Mogen, Kaylee Goncalves, Xana Kernodle, and Ethan Chapin in Moscow, Idaho. He faces four counts of first-degree murder and a felony burglary charge, with the possibility of the death penalty if convicted. The trial is scheduled for August 2025, and it remains to be seen how the defense will use this prior investigation.
