Former Florida Congressman Matt Gaetz has revealed he's considering a run for governor in 2026. In a statement to Fox News Digital, Gaetz confirmed he is "evaluating the possibility" and acknowledged that a serious campaign would require "concrete steps" towards the end of 2025.
Gaetz, who now hosts a program on One America News Network, shared that numerous Floridians have urged him to seek the governorship. He stated that while it's premature to make a final decision, he plans to give the matter serious thought and discuss it with his wife.
Citing concerns about rising costs in Florida, particularly property and casualty insurance, Gaetz expressed confidence in his ability to "combat special interests" responsible for price hikes. He indicated a strong inclination to run if he believes he can "effect positive change" for Floridians.

The upcoming gubernatorial race is guaranteed to be a competitive one, as incumbent Governor Ron DeSantis, who was re-elected in 2022, will be term-limited in 2026. This open seat has already attracted attention from potential candidates, including Gaetz, and promises a dynamic election cycle.
Gaetz's recent political history includes a 2024 re-election victory in Florida's 1st Congressional District, followed by a swift resignation after being nominated by then President-elect Trump for U.S. attorney general. He subsequently withdrew from consideration for the position.

Trump has endorsed Florida Chief Financial Officer Jimmy Patronis for Gaetz's vacated House seat, with the Republican primary scheduled for later this month.
Gaetz has also been the subject of a House Ethics Committee report alleging violations of House Rules and standards of conduct. The allegations include prostitution, statutory rape, illicit drug use, accepting improper gifts, and obstruction of Congress. Gaetz has publicly challenged these allegations.

In 2023, Gaetz played a key role in the removal of Kevin McCarthy as Speaker of the House.
