Reports indicate House Speaker Kevin McCarthy assured former President Donald Trump of a House vote this month to expunge Trump's two impeachments. This commitment was reportedly made in June following McCarthy's public expression of uncertainty about Trump's viability as the strongest 2024 presidential candidate. While some House Republicans, including Elise Stefanik and Marjorie Taylor Greene, have advocated for expunging the impeachment votes, the proposal hasn't gained widespread support. Many Republicans fear revisiting the impeachments could negatively impact vulnerable GOP members in the upcoming elections. Despite potential opposition, McCarthy reportedly committed to holding the vote before the August recess.

Nebraska Representative Don Bacon has voiced his skepticism about expunging the impeachments, considering them settled matters. For Trump, expungement would be a symbolic win as he confronts significant legal challenges related to his business practices and attempts to overturn the 2020 election results. While these charges loom, Trump maintains a substantial lead over his Republican primary rivals, including Florida Governor Ron DeSantis, former South Carolina Governor Nikki Haley, and former Vice President Mike Pence.
