Following a public speaking incident where his pants fell down, a Mexican politician is advocating for legislation to penalize those who mock individuals with disabilities. Javier Borrego, a member of parliament for the left-wing National Regeneration Movement (MORENA) party, attributed the incident to recent weight loss following surgery for a spinal condition.
Borrego expressed his distress over the media's reaction to the incident, stating that he and his family were subjected to ridicule. He emphasized the importance of respecting individuals with disabilities and their families. During the July 16 event, Borrego's pants unexpectedly dropped to his ankles as he addressed the crowd. He explained that his recent weight loss due to surgery had left his clothes loose-fitting.

Following the incident, Borrego announced his intention to introduce a measure to sanction those who mock people with disabilities. He has also received support from fellow senators who have provided him with suspenders.

Adding to the unfortunate timing, the speech was part of MORENA's election campaign launch for the "National Project 2024-2030." President Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador's MORENA party currently holds a significant majority in regional governments across Mexico. The party's recent victory in the State of Mexico's gubernatorial race further solidifies its influence. Delfina Gomez, MORENA's candidate, will become the state's first female governor. As the upcoming presidential election approaches, Mexico City’s mayor, Claudia Sheinbaum, is considered a leading contender for MORENA’s candidacy.
