Comedian Michael Rapaport recently expressed his frustration with TikTok, calling the platform "dirty" and "biased" during a temporary outage for U.S. users. Rapaport's criticism centered on the lack of clear leadership and accountability at TikTok, contrasting it with platforms like Twitter or Meta where users can directly address concerns to identifiable figures like Elon Musk or Mark Zuckerberg.
He questioned the anonymity of those in charge, stating, "We don't know who the heck has been running this platform." Rapaport also criticized the content allowed on TikTok, alleging the presence of inappropriate and offensive material. He further expressed concern over what he perceived as antisemitic content.
Rapaport's rant occurred shortly before TikTok service was restored to U.S. users following a roughly 12-hour outage. The outage was related to ongoing discussions regarding TikTok's ownership by the Chinese company ByteDance and potential national security concerns. A message on the app prior to its restoration indicated President Trump was working towards a resolution with the company.
While acknowledging the existence of issues on other social media platforms, Rapaport emphasized that at least with companies like Facebook, Instagram, X (formerly Twitter), WhatsApp, and Snapchat, the leadership is known. This transparency, he argued, is lacking with TikTok. Ironically, Rapaport himself is an active TikTok user with a substantial following.
This isn't Rapaport's first public critique of a prominent figure. He previously criticized California Governor Gavin Newsom's response to the Los Angeles fires, arguing the governor should prioritize "fire-proofing" the state over political discussions.
