Following a controversy stemming from a warning about Russian space-based nuclear capabilities last year, Representative Mike Johnson (R-LA) is taking over from Representative Mike Turner (R-OH) as the chairman of the House Intelligence Committee, according to a source who spoke with Fox News Digital.
The shift comes after Johnson expressed discontent with Turner's decision to issue what appeared to be an unanticipated warning regarding the declassification of information concerning Russian anti-satellite technology.
Turner, known for his hawkish stance, occasionally clashed with the Trump-aligned wing of the Republican Party on issues like aid to Ukraine and Section 702 of the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act. His removal as chairman came as a surprise to many, especially since Turner had attended a dinner with President-elect Trump and other House GOP committee chairs over the weekend, despite not being officially named chairman by Johnson.

In a statement following the announcement, Turner emphasized his commitment to national security during his chairmanship, stating, "Under my leadership, we restored the integrity of the Committee and returned its mission to its core focus of national security. The threat from our adversaries is real and requires serious deliberations." He will retain his positions on the Armed Services and Oversight committees.
Rep. Jim Himes (D-CT), the ranking Democrat on the Intelligence Committee, expressed concern over Turner's removal, describing it as chilling and noting Turner's resistance to aligning himself with Trump. The change was triggered by Turner's warning last February about a significant national security threat, urging President Biden to declassify related information for Congress, the administration, and allies to address.

Johnson subsequently sought to reassure the public, acknowledging Turner's statement while emphasizing there was no cause for alarm. He affirmed the situation was being handled and that there was no immediate danger, although he couldn't disclose classified details. In the following days, information about the Russian threat emerged, highlighting Russia's potential to disrupt U.S. military satellites and vital space infrastructure.

Turner has a history of challenging Trump, including criticizing rumors amplified by Trump and then-Vice President-elect JD Vance about Haitian migrants harming pets. He labeled these rumors as tragic, untrue, and divisive within the community.
