Kevin Costner's Divorce Battle Intensifies Over Child Support Demands

Created: JANUARY 27, 2025

The divorce proceedings between Kevin Costner and Christine Baumgartner are heating up, with a new dispute erupting over child support payments. Just hours after a judge ordered Baumgartner to vacate their shared Santa Barbara home by the end of July, she filed new legal documents requesting a substantial sum in child support.

Baumgartner is seeking $248,000 per month, or alternatively, the guideline rate of $217,300 monthly. Her request also includes full coverage of their three children's private school tuition, healthcare expenses, and extracurricular activities. This stands in stark contrast to Costner's proposed monthly payment of approximately $52,000.

The new filing comes on the heels of a forensic accountant's report revealing Costner's 2022 gross cash flow to be $24,518,887, equating to over $2 million per month. Baumgartner argues that Costner's proposed child support amount represents only a small fraction of his income and is far less than what's needed to maintain the children's lifestyle. She points out that the proposed amount is less than the monthly rent Costner receives for one of his guest houses and significantly less than his own stated monthly expenses of $240,000, which include expenses for the children when they are in his care.

Baumgartner contests Costner's claim of wanting a seamless divorce for their children, highlighting the eviction notice as evidence to the contrary. Costner, however, denies he is "kicking" his children out, stating they will remain in the home during his custody periods.

Baumgartner's filing also requests that Costner advance $350,000 in attorney's fees and $150,000 in forensic costs, arguing that the complexity of Costner's finances necessitates these expenses. She further alleges that Costner is actively trying to minimize his financial obligations to their children. In response, Costner claims Baumgartner made unauthorized charges exceeding $100,000 on his credit card for legal and accounting fees since April, leading him to cancel her companion card and impose a $15,000 monthly cap for emergencies related to the children.

The premarital agreement between Costner and Baumgartner, which stipulates that she vacate his properties in the event of a divorce, is also a point of contention. Costner claims to have deposited $1 million into her account per the agreement, a sum which has reportedly grown to $1.45 million. Baumgartner, however, states she hasn't accepted these funds and has requested their return.
