Senate Report Reveals Intelligence Failures Leading to January 6th Capitol Riot

Created: JANUARY 18, 2025

Senator John Kennedy (R-LA) criticized the House's January 6th investigation, calling it a "partisan car wreck" and emphasizing a new Senate report's findings. The report, released by the Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs Committee, reveals that both the FBI and the Department of Homeland Security downplayed or disregarded substantial intelligence pointing to potential violence before the Capitol riot. Kennedy expressed the need for an objective, non-partisan investigation into the events of January 6th, lamenting the politicization of the issue and the lack of transparency from government institutions. He stressed the importance of truth and accountability to restore public trust.

The Senate report details how intelligence agencies failed to adequately assess and warn of the potential for violence, despite online discussions and plans by some of then-President Trump's supporters. A key example highlighted in the report is a December 2020 tip to the FBI regarding the Proud Boys' intention to be in Washington D.C. on the day of the certification of Joe Biden's victory, with a plan to "literally kill people." The report also notes that agencies were aware of numerous social media posts indicating potential violence, including calls for supporters to come armed, storm the Capitol, and harm lawmakers.
