Created: JANUARY 16, 2025

In a move signaling increased border security efforts, the Pentagon is deploying an additional 1,500 active-duty troops to the U.S. southern border. This deployment, bringing the total number of service members at the border to 4,000, represents a significant boost to the existing force.

The new deployment comprises 1,000 Army personnel and 500 Marines, who will primarily be stationed in El Paso and San Diego. Their tasks will include reinforcing physical barriers and providing aerial support, including airlift capabilities and intelligence gathering.

This deployment marks a shift in strategy, with the deployed Marines being armed and prepared for potential engagements. While their primary role is not law enforcement, they are authorized to act in self-defense. This posture reflects a heightened awareness of potential threats from cartels operating in the border region.

Beyond border security measures, the deployment will also facilitate deportation efforts. Military aircraft, including C-17 and C-130 planes, will be utilized to deport over 5,000 individuals detained by Customs and Border Protection. This coordinated effort involves the Department of Homeland Security for in-flight law enforcement and the State Department for diplomatic clearances and notifications.
