New Hampshire Democrat Calls Moms for Liberty 'Taliban in Minivans'

Created: JANUARY 27, 2025

A New Hampshire state representative, Catherine Sofikitis, a Democrat, has ignited controversy by referring to members of the parental rights group Moms for Liberty as "a--holes" and comparing them to terrorists in a recent tweet. This sparked widespread condemnation and criticism from Republicans and the organization itself.

The New Hampshire Republican Party Chairman, Chris Ager, denounced Sofikitis' comments as "disgusting" and reflective of the Democratic Party's alleged disdain for parental involvement in education. He expressed concern over what he perceives as a broader trend of disrespect towards parents engaged in their children's schooling.

Moms for Liberty co-founder Tina Descovich responded to the remarks, urging elected officials to cease "demonizing parents." She emphasized the group's commitment to improving the education system and called for collaboration between parents and officials for the benefit of children.

Moms for Liberty has faced considerable opposition, particularly from those on the left, due to its stance on issues like mask mandates, critical race theory, and explicit books in schools. Despite being labeled a "hate group" by some, the organization maintains its mission is to empower parents to advocate for their rights in education.

The group recently concluded a national summit featuring prominent Republican figures, including Florida Governor Ron DeSantis, who acknowledged the criticism directed at Moms for Liberty and framed it as a sign of the group's effectiveness. He commended the organization for its efforts and suggested the backlash indicates their success in challenging the status quo.
