New Jersey's Democratic Governor, Phil Murphy, experienced an unwelcome reception during a recent concert appearance in his own backyard. At the Red Rock Tap + Grill in Monmouth County, merely a couple of miles from his residence, the governor was met with a cascade of boos from the audience.
The incident unfolded after Brian Kirk, frontman of Brian Kirk & the Jirks, invited Murphy onto the stage. A video circulating on Twitter, shared by Matt Rooney of SaveJersey.com, captured the moment. As Murphy embraced the band members, the crowd erupted in disapproval. Kirk reacted by momentarily halting the interaction to address the audience, urging them to show respect for his friend, emphasizing that the occasion wasn't about politics.
This incident comes on the heels of ongoing tensions between Murphy's administration and the state's breweries. Last year, the administration implemented several restrictions affecting these businesses, including limits on food service and private events. Although a bipartisan bill aiming to lift these restrictions has been passed by both the Assembly and Senate, it remains unsigned by the governor, leaving the industry in a state of uncertainty. The New Jersey Brewers Association has voiced concerns about the potential economic impact of these regulations, fearing business closures or relocations to neighboring states. The Red Rock Tap + Grill, the venue of the concert, has also publicly acknowledged staffing challenges due to the current labor market.
Adding to the recent controversies surrounding Murphy is his approval of a significant tax break for Orsted, a Danish offshore wind developer. This tax break, estimated by some to be close to $1 billion, is intended to support the company's wind energy projects off the Jersey Shore. This decision has drawn criticism, particularly in light of the ongoing economic challenges faced by many businesses within the state.
Neither Governor Murphy's office nor Brian Kirk has responded to requests for comment on these matters.
