Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas embarked on a four-day visit to China on Tuesday, coinciding with Beijing's increasing focus on mediating Middle Eastern affairs and securing energy resources. China's Foreign Ministry expressed its willingness to facilitate improved relations between the Palestinian Authority and the Israeli government, which have significantly deteriorated in recent years. The ministry did not disclose specifics about Abbas's itinerary or who he would be meeting during his stay.
The visit comes amidst a backdrop of escalating violence between Israel and Palestine in the West Bank, marking the deadliest period of conflict in the territory for years. It also follows China's successful mediation between Iran and Saudi Arabia, which resulted in the restoration of diplomatic ties between the two nations. This diplomatic achievement was perceived as a win for China, particularly as some Gulf Arab states believe the US is gradually reducing its presence in the region.

However, the long-term success of the reconciliation between Iran and Saudi Arabia remains uncertain. The two countries have a history of rivalry stemming from the 1979 Iranian revolution, and they have supported opposing armed groups and political factions throughout the region. Chinese Foreign Minister Qin Gang, as quoted by state broadcaster CCTV, affirmed China's support for the resumption of peace talks between Palestine and Israel based on the two-state solution, and expressed China's readiness to play an active role in this process.
