Pope Francis Hospitalized for Tests and Bronchitis Treatment

Created: JANUARY 14, 2025

Pope Francis was admitted to Rome's Agostino Gemelli Polyclinic on Friday morning for a series of diagnostic tests and continued treatment for ongoing bronchitis, according to a Vatican statement. The hospitalization follows a recent diagnosis of bronchitis last Thursday and comes amidst a busy schedule of events planned for the Catholic church's jubilee year.

The 88-year-old pontiff completed his scheduled private audiences before heading to the hospital. This recent health concern follows a couple of incidents in the past few months. In January, the Vatican reported that the Pope had bruised his right forearm after a fall, requiring it to be immobilized as a precaution. Earlier this month, he narrowly avoided a fall when the handle of his walking stick broke as he entered the Vatican auditorium for an audience. The Pope has been known to use a wheelchair or cane due to knee problems.

During his weekly general audience just two days prior, Pope Francis acknowledged his bronchitis, stating he was unable to complete a reading and expressing hope to do so next time. Due to his current health condition, the Vatican has canceled the jubilee audience scheduled for Saturday. Cardinal José Tolentino de Mendonça, Prefect of the Dicastery for Culture and Education, will preside over the Holy Mass for the Jubilee of Artists and the World of Culture on Sunday. Furthermore, the meeting with artists planned for Monday at Cinecittà has been canceled.
