Rand Paul Investigates Fauci's Employment Status and Taxpayer-Funded Benefits

Created: JANUARY 18, 2025

Senator Rand Paul is pressing for clarity on Dr. Anthony Fauci's employment status and potential ongoing receipt of government benefits following Fauci's departure from his leadership role at the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases in 2022. Paul has formally requested information from Health and Human Services Secretary Xavier Becerra, the department's Inspector General, and the current head of the National Institutes of Health (NIH) concerning Fauci's current relationship with the federal government.

While Fauci publicly stated his intention to move on to "the next chapter" rather than retire, his specific situation remains ambiguous. Paul's letter highlights the lack of clarity regarding Fauci's official separation from government employment and whether he continues to receive benefits typically associated with active public service, such as legal counsel and protective services. Paul's inquiry emphasizes the importance of transparency regarding Fauci's status and the use of taxpayer funds.

A source on Capitol Hill revealed that the Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs Committee, on which Paul serves as the ranking Republican, expected notification regarding the continuation or termination of Fauci's security detail after his departure from the administration. However, six months later, the committee has yet to receive any updates. Paul's investigation seeks to determine whether Fauci maintains any affiliation with HHS, NIH, or other federal agencies, and if he receives a government salary. The senator is also inquiring about Fauci's access to government facilities and any ongoing legal or security services provided at taxpayer expense.

Xavier Becerra

Earlier this year, Paul publicly questioned Fauci's motives, suggesting that continued government employment might be a strategy to secure legal protection. Paul expressed his concern that Fauci might be seeking to avoid potential indictment and vowed to investigate the matter thoroughly. He believes that such an arrangement, if true, would be unethical and warrants a full investigation.
