Trump indicated plans for mutual visits and immediate talks between their respective teams. He further stated his intention to inform Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy about the conversation, assigning key figures like Secretary of State Marco Rubio, CIA Director John Ratcliffe, National Security Advisor Michael Waltz, and Special Envoy Steve Witkoff to lead the negotiation efforts.

The Russia-Ukraine war, which began with Russia's invasion in February 2022, has been a central point in Trump's 2024 campaign. He has consistently asserted his ability to resolve the conflict if re-elected, claiming it would have been avoided under his leadership.

Leavitt fielded questions about the negotiations, addressing the absence of retired Army Lt. Gen. Keith Kellogg, the administration's special envoy for Ukraine and Russia, from the negotiation team.
