In a recent press briefing, White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt addressed the Trump administration's perspective on Russia and its leader, Vladimir Putin. She characterized the relationship as one of both competition and adversity, emphasizing the President's aim to maintain diplomatic ties while holding other world leaders accountable. Leavitt highlighted Trump's approach of "peace through strength" as a key asset in navigating international relations.

This statement followed Trump's announcement on Truth Social regarding a phone call with Putin, where the two leaders agreed to commence negotiations to end the ongoing conflict in Ukraine. Trump indicated plans for mutual visits and immediate talks between their respective teams. He further stated his intention to inform Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy about the conversation, assigning key figures like Secretary of State Marco Rubio, CIA Director John Ratcliffe, National Security Advisor Michael Waltz, and Special Envoy Steve Witkoff to lead the negotiation efforts.

Leavitt fielded questions about the negotiations, addressing the absence of retired Army Lt. Gen. Keith Kellogg, the administration's special envoy for Ukraine and Russia, from the negotiation team. She clarified that Kellogg remains a vital part of the team and has played a significant role in bringing the discussions to this stage.

The Kremlin released its own account of the call, mentioning Putin's invitation to Trump to visit Moscow. Leavitt declined to comment on any potential visit. Trump later confirmed on Truth Social that he had also spoken with Zelenskyy, describing the conversation as productive and focused on peace. He highlighted their discussion of the upcoming meeting in Munich, where Vice President JD Vance and Secretary of State Marco Rubio will lead the U.S. delegation. Trump expressed optimism for a positive outcome and reiterated the need to end the war and its devastating consequences.

Fogel meets with Trump

These peace talks coincide with the recent release of Marc Fogel, an American teacher imprisoned in Russia since 2021 for marijuana possession. Trump expressed gratitude to Putin for Fogel's release and his involvement in the peace initiative, expressing hope for a swift and successful resolution.
