Patel Vows to Investigate FBI's Alleged Targeting of Religious Groups

Created: JANUARY 27, 2025

During his confirmation hearing, FBI director nominee Kash Patel assured Senator Josh Hawley (R-MO) that he would investigate the FBI's alleged surveillance of Catholic parishes and other religious institutions. Hawley presented a memo purportedly listing suspect churches and directing the recruitment of informants within those congregations. Patel expressed his disapproval of such practices and committed to withdrawing the memo if confirmed. He also pledged to investigate the memo's origins, identify those responsible, and hold them accountable for any potential violations of First Amendment rights. Hawley emphasized the gravity of the situation, describing the FBI as "the most powerful law enforcement body in this nation" and expressing his disbelief that such actions could occur in the United States. He called for the department to be "cleaned up" and restore the "sacred trust" placed in it. Patel agreed, promising to use the FBI's investigative powers to uncover the truth and ensure accountability. This exchange follows former President Trump's announcement to pardon pro-life activists convicted under the FACE Act during the Biden administration. Senator Mike Lee (R-UT) has also introduced legislation to dismantle the FACE Act, with many lawmakers alleging its weaponization against pro-life groups and Christians.
