Alfonso Rodriguez, 70, who was found guilty of the 2003 kidnapping, rape, and murder of 22-year-old Dru Sjodin, has been transferred from death row in Terre Haute, Indiana, to a high-security federal prison in Sumterville, Florida. Sjodin was abducted from a Grand Forks, North Dakota, mall parking lot, and her remains were discovered in Crookston, Minnesota, several months later.
Originally sentenced to death in 2007, Rodriguez's sentence was overturned in 2021 due to legal issues surrounding his trial, including concerns about the coroner's testimony and the handling of a potential insanity defense. Prosecutors decided not to pursue the death penalty again, resulting in Rodriguez's current sentence of life imprisonment without parole.
