Former ESPN analyst Ryan Clark recently addressed allegations made by Sage Steele in her lawsuit against the network. Steele claimed Clark refused to work with her due to differing political viewpoints. While appearing on "The Michele Tafoya Show," Clark clarified his position, acknowledging some truth to the accusations while offering a more nuanced perspective.
The lawsuit stemmed from comments Steele made on Jay Cutler's podcast in 2021, where she questioned Barack Obama's racial identity. Clark stated that while he disagreed with Steele on various political matters, including vaccinations and Colin Kaepernick's protests, her conservative stance wasn't the primary issue. Rather, it was her remarks about Obama that he found offensive.
Steele had recounted an interaction with Barbara Walters on "The View," where she was criticized for identifying as biracial. Walters pointed out that Obama, also biracial, identified as Black on the census. Steele's response on Cutler's podcast, questioning Obama's choice given his upbringing, was what Clark took exception to.
Clark explained that as a Black man, he understands Obama would be perceived as Black regardless of how he identified, given societal context. He felt Steele's comments disregarded Obama's family life and cultural connections. While admitting he requested a different co-host for a segment with Steele following her remarks, Clark emphasized this was a singular incident. He maintained they worked together cordially afterward, although they no longer communicate.
Clark stated he believed in everyone’s right to express their views and wished Steele well in her future endeavors, acknowledging she has now found a platform where she feels her voice and passion are valued.
