Virginia Governor Glenn Youngkin is leading a Republican initiative to simplify absentee and early in-person voting ahead of the crucial November elections in the state. This move, announced on Fox News, is part of a broader GOP strategy to gain full control of the Virginia government, a state that has been trending Democratic until Youngkin's 2021 election sweep.
Recognizing the recent Democratic advantage in early voting, Youngkin emphasized the importance of voter engagement in a statement, saying, "Your vote matters, and we need everyone interested in moving Virginia forward to participate. We can't afford to start Election Day thousands of votes behind." Republicans are aiming to flip the state Senate, currently controlled by Democrats, while maintaining their majority in the House of Delegates.

In collaboration with the Republican Party of Virginia, the Republican State Leadership Committee, the Virginia Senate Republican Caucus, and the House Republican Campaign Committee, Youngkin launched the 'Secure Your Vote Virginia' initiative. This data-driven program encourages Republicans and undecided voters to vote absentee by mail or early in-person, furthering Youngkin's campaign and his Spirit of Virginia PAC's efforts to secure a Republican victory in November.
Youngkin stressed the significance of early voting in a video, stating, "To achieve our goals, I need your early vote this year. We can't enter the elections trailing by thousands of votes. Secure your vote before Election Day." His 2021 victory, as a first-time candidate from the business wing of the party, energized Republicans nationwide. He defeated former Democratic Governor Terry McAuliffe, marking the first GOP gubernatorial win in Virginia in twelve years. Republicans also secured the lieutenant governor and state attorney general positions.
While political observers have considered Youngkin as a potential 2024 presidential candidate, he has remained focused on his gubernatorial duties and the 2023 Virginia elections. However, he hasn't completely ruled out a presidential run, and a strong Republican showing in November could propel him towards a 2024 campaign if the nomination race remains open.

The Virginia initiative mirrors the Republican National Committee's nationwide 'Bank Your Vote' campaign for the 2024 elections. This program aims to inform and mobilize Republican voters about early voting options, including in-person early voting, absentee voting, and ballot harvesting where permitted. Both the RNC and Youngkin's efforts seek to counter the Democratic advantage in early voting and address former President Donald Trump's past criticisms of mail-in voting, which surged during the 2020 pandemic and favored Democrats.
