Raptors Select Darko Rajakovic as New Head Coach

Created: JANUARY 24, 2025

The Toronto Raptors have reportedly chosen Memphis Grizzlies assistant coach Darko Rajakovic to lead their team. ESPN reports that the offer was extended on Saturday, and the contract is expected to be finalized soon. This decision comes about two months after the Raptors parted ways with their previous coach, Nick Nurse, who led the team to a championship title. The Raptors finished the 2022-23 season with a 41-41 record, missing the playoffs after a loss to the Chicago Bulls in the play-in tournament.

Rajakovic, originally from Serbia, has contributed to the Grizzlies' success over the past three seasons as they became a strong team in the Western Conference. Before joining the Grizzlies, he spent six years with the Oklahoma City Thunder and one year with the Phoenix Suns.

With Rajakovic's appointment, all NBA coaching vacancies are now filled following a wave of prominent coaching changes in recent months. After Nurse's departure from Toronto, the Milwaukee Bucks dismissed Mike Budenholzer, the Phoenix Suns parted ways with Monty Williams, and the Philadelphia 76ers ended their relationship with Doc Rivers. Nick Nurse was subsequently hired by the 76ers, who are aiming to advance to the Eastern Conference finals for the first time since the 2000-2001 season.
