Progressive foreign policy analysts are acknowledging the significant role played by President-elect Trump in brokering the recent ceasefire agreement between Israel and Hamas. These experts suggest that Trump's assertive stance pushed the parties towards a resolution that President Biden seemed unable or unwilling to achieve.
Reports indicate that Trump's clear desire for the conflict's end and his direct pressure on Israeli Prime Minister Netanyahu contrasted sharply with Biden's approach. Matt Duss, executive vice president of the Center for International Policy, observed that Biden's unwavering support for Israel may have inadvertently allowed Netanyahu to prolong the conflict without consequence.

The ceasefire agreement, announced by President Biden, includes a comprehensive cessation of hostilities, the withdrawal of Israeli forces from populated areas in Gaza, the release of hostages held by Hamas, and a substantial reconstruction plan for Gaza. IDF Reserve Brig. Gen. Amir Avivi attributed the timing of the deal to Trump's threat of repercussions if hostages were not released before his inauguration.

White House national security communications adviser John Kirby acknowledged the involvement of Steve Witkoff, Trump's incoming Middle East special envoy, in the negotiations. Trump's public warning to Hamas further underscored his commitment to resolving the hostage situation. Duss, formerly a foreign policy aide to Senator Bernie Sanders, highlighted the shift in dynamics following Trump's team's engagement, suggesting that the potential costs for ignoring US criticism had become more tangible.

Sandra Tamari, executive director of the Adalah Justice Project, noted Trump's attempt to differentiate himself from Biden by projecting strength, a tactic that seemingly proved effective in this situation. While not explicitly mentioning Trump, Wayne County Commissioner Sam Baydoun expressed disappointment that a similar deal wasn't reached months earlier, potentially preventing civilian casualties.
Neither Trump's team nor the Biden White House offered immediate comments on the matter.
