Senate Armed Services Chair Backs Hegseth Amidst Alcohol Allegations

Created: JANUARY 26, 2025

Amidst swirling accusations regarding Pete Hegseth's alleged alcohol use, Senate Armed Services Committee Chairman Roger Wicker (R-Miss) has voiced his staunch support for President Trump's Defense Secretary nominee. Wicker dismissed recent media reports based on confidential briefings about Hegseth's FBI background check as "inaccurate" and criticized the reliance on anonymous sources.

Wicker emphasized having received multiple detailed briefings on the investigation and expressed concern about the sensitive vetting process being publicly discussed. He directly addressed a CNN report citing sources claiming Hegseth's ex-wife, Samantha Hegseth, provided a statement to the FBI about his drinking habits.

A source familiar with the FBI investigation confirmed to Fox News that Samantha Hegseth did submit a statement to the FBI regarding Hegseth's alleged alcohol issues, and this information was relayed to Senators Wicker and Reed. Despite these allegations, Wicker remains unwavering in his support, asserting his confidence in Hegseth's readiness to lead the Pentagon. He cited Hegseth's backing from both President Trump and Senate Republicans, urging a swift confirmation given the current national security climate.

A Senate vote on Hegseth's nomination is anticipated this weekend unless a bipartisan agreement is reached to expedite the process. The confirmation process has been marked by controversy, including a recent affidavit from Hegseth's former sister-in-law, Danielle Hegseth (not Samantha's sister), alleging alcohol abuse and instances where Samantha felt unsafe. However, Danielle Hegseth clarified she never personally witnessed any physical or sexual abuse. Samantha Hegseth has also denied any physical abuse in a statement to NBC News.
