Comedian Shane Gillis is making a comeback to Saturday Night Live (SNL) as host on March 1st, alongside musical guest Tate McRae. This marks his second time hosting the show, a remarkable feat considering his past dismissal in 2019 due to resurfaced racially insensitive comments made on a podcast. SNL creator Lorne Michaels previously stated he was unaware of these remarks at the time of Gillis' initial hiring, calling them "offensive, hurtful and unacceptable."
During his first hosting gig in February 2024, Gillis addressed the controversy head-on in his opening monologue, jokingly urging the audience not to research his past. Despite the initial setback, Gillis's career has flourished. His Netflix special, "Beautiful Dogs," achieved international top 10 status, including two weeks in the U.S. Top 10. His 2024 arena tour shattered attendance records, including at Toronto's Scotiabank Arena and Philadelphia's Wells Fargo Center.
Gillis also featured in a prominent Bud Light Super Bowl 2025 commercial alongside Post Malone and Peyton Manning, which garnered significant views and became one of the company's most successful campaigns. His scripted comedy series, "Tires," is set for a second season on Netflix after a successful debut in the platform's Top 10. The show features a cast of comedic veterans including Jon Lovitz, Vince Vaughn, and Ron White. Furthermore, Gillis co-hosts the world's leading Patreon podcast, "Matt and Shane's Secret Podcast," with Matt McCusker, boasting over 5.5 million monthly downloads. He is currently on his international "Shane Gillis Live" stand-up tour, with upcoming shows in various locations including Washington, D.C., Salt Lake City, and the UK.
