Sheriff Chris Swanson Enters Michigan Governor's Race, Challenging Traditional Politics

Created: JANUARY 27, 2025

Michigan's political landscape is heating up with Genesee County Sheriff Chris Swanson officially announcing his candidacy for governor in the 2026 election. Swanson, who gained national recognition for marching with protesters after George Floyd's death, is positioning himself as a different kind of Democrat, focusing on issues like public safety and immigration.

Swanson launched his campaign at Mott Community College in Flint, emphasizing his commitment to unity and problem-solving. He stated, "When there’s a challenge, we will solve it. When there’s a crisis, we will bring calm. When there’s an opportunity, we will seize it. I believe everyone has value. Michigan has value. It’s why I’ve always tried to find ways to help and bring people together. I believe that together, we are tough enough to win for Michigan."

The sheriff joins a growing field of candidates, including Secretary of State Jocelyn Benson on the Democratic side, and Senate Majority Leader Aric Nesbitt representing the Republicans. Lieutenant Governor Garlin Gilchrist II is also considering a Democratic bid, while Congressman John James is a potential Republican contender. Adding further intrigue, former Detroit Mayor Mike Duggan is running as an independent.

While Swanson enjoys strong support within Genesee County, having been re-elected sheriff with 65% of the vote in 2024, he faces the challenge of building statewide name recognition. He'll be competing against Benson, who has a proven track record in statewide elections and significant fundraising capabilities.

Swanson's unconventional approach, highlighted by his decision to march with protesters in 2020, garnered praise from figures like Governor Whitmer and former President Obama. This action also led to his appearance and endorsement of Kamala Harris at the 2024 Democratic National Convention, a notable display of law enforcement support for the then-vice president, especially given the strong alignment of many sheriffs with Donald Trump's policies.

His background in law enforcement could be a double-edged sword. While it might appeal to some voters concerned about public safety, it could also alienate those advocating for police reform within the Democratic party. Swanson believes his unique profile and focus on bringing people together offer a fresh perspective that voters are seeking.

Swanson's entry into the race adds an intriguing dynamic to the 2026 Michigan gubernatorial election, promising a compelling contest between established political figures and a candidate aiming to redefine the Democratic party's image.
