A Los Angeles television station has declined to broadcast an advertisement condemning the Los Angeles Dodgers' decision to honor a controversial drag group, the Sisters of Perpetual Indulgence, at their Pride Night event on June 16th. The ad, part of a $1 million campaign by CatholicVote, criticizes the Dodgers for celebrating a group many perceive as anti-Catholic.
The ad, titled "The Dodgers Have Lost Their Way," was intended for broadcast on TV and radio leading up to the game. However, Spectrum SportsNet LA, the Dodgers' broadcast partner, rejected the ad, deeming it "too controversial." This occurred despite initially accepting the ad and only requesting the blurring of a potentially offensive image.
CatholicVote expressed disappointment but not surprise at the rejection, stating the Dodgers have repeatedly prioritized the sensitivities of extremist groups. Despite this setback, CatholicVote has found alternative platforms for the ad, ensuring its message reaches millions across various channels.
The ad itself contrasts the Dodgers' legacy of breaking barriers, particularly with Jackie Robinson, with their current decision to honor the Sisters of Perpetual Indulgence. It highlights the group's mockery of Catholic nuns and religious symbols, questioning the Dodgers' commitment to inclusivity and tolerance in light of this choice.
This incident follows the Dodgers' initial invitation, subsequent withdrawal, and then reinstatement of the invitation to the Sisters of Perpetual Indulgence, prompted by LA Pride's withdrawal from the event in solidarity with the group.
CatholicVote Director Tommy Valentine criticized the Dodgers' decision, emphasizing the stark contrast between honoring a group that mocks and sexualizes Catholic teachings and the team's historical stance against bigotry. While Spectrum SportsNet LA has not commented, CatholicVote has secured alternative platforms to air its ad during Dodgers games streamed in Los Angeles and New York City.
