Thousands Evacuated as Monsoon Flooding Ravages Eastern Pakistan

Over 14,000 people have been rescued from flood-stricken villages in eastern Pakistan following torrential monsoon rains that caused two rivers to overflow. The heavy rainfall, which started in late June, has tragically claimed at least 91 lives nationwide due to weather-related incidents.

Mohsin Naqvi, a senior official in Punjab province, confirmed the ongoing evacuations via Twitter after visiting the affected areas. The flooding began earlier this week when India released water from dams into the Ravi River, which flows into Pakistan. The already swollen Sutlej River further exacerbated the situation, inundating numerous villages throughout the province.

Pakistan's meteorological agency predicts continued rainfall this week in Baluchistan and Sindh provinces, raising concerns about a repeat of last summer's devastating floods. Those floods impacted 33 million people, resulted in 1,739 fatalities, and inflicted a staggering $30 billion in economic damage. The current monsoon season is expected to last until September.
