Trudeau's Political Future Uncertain After Freeland's Resignation, Trump Suggests Gretzky

Created: JANUARY 26, 2025

Former Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau's top advisor has cast doubt on his political future following the resignation of Finance Minister Chrystia Freeland. This comes just days after former US President Donald Trump playfully suggested NHL icon Wayne Gretzky as a potential replacement.

Gerry Butts, Trudeau's former chief advisor, expressed skepticism about Trudeau leading the Liberal Party into the next election. In a recent Substack newsletter, Butts described Freeland's departure as a significant setback, potentially sealing Trudeau's political fate. He emphasized the need for a proper leadership race if Trudeau steps down, advocating for a contest to determine the best candidate.

Trump's tongue-in-cheek suggestion of Gretzky as Trudeau's successor added an unexpected twist to the situation. In a Truth Social post, Trump recounted a conversation with Gretzky, urging him to run for Prime Minister. Though Gretzky declined, Trump encouraged a "Draft Wayne Gretzky" movement, adding a layer of levity to the Canadian political landscape.

Following Freeland's resignation, Trudeau has faced mounting pressure to resign himself. Trump, who previously suggested Canada become the 51st US state, commented on Freeland's departure, criticizing her conduct and celebrating her exit. He referred to Trudeau as "Governor Justin Trudeau," continuing his playful jab at the Canadian leader.

Adding to the pressure, John Williamson, chair of the House of Commons Public Accounts Committee, announced plans to convene meetings to consider a vote of no confidence in the Liberal government. This vote, if successful, could lead to the government's downfall. The Canadian Parliament is scheduled to reconvene later in January.

Gretzky's wife even shared Trump's post on social media, amplifying the attention surrounding the unusual suggestion. The confluence of Freeland's resignation, Trump's commentary, and the potential no-confidence vote has created significant uncertainty about the future of Canadian politics.
