Trump Celebrates Wray's FBI Departure, Backs Patel as Successor

Created: JANUARY 25, 2025

Former President Donald Trump lauded the resignation of FBI Director Christopher Wray, calling it a "great day for America" in an exclusive statement to Fox News Digital. Trump believes Wray's departure will halt the perceived "weaponization" of the bureau and expressed strong support for his nominee, Kash Patel, to take the helm.

Trump criticized Wray's tenure, citing the FBI's investigation into his conduct and actions related to the January 6th Capitol riot as an overreach. He stated his administration aims to "restore the rule of law" and accused the FBI under Wray's leadership of targeting innocent Americans.

Trump championed Patel as the "most qualified nominee" in FBI history, emphasizing his commitment to restoring law and order. He expressed confidence that Patel's confirmation would pave the way for positive changes within the bureau, aligning with what he believes the American people desire.

Wray announced his resignation during a town hall meeting, explaining his decision to step down in January is intended to prevent further politicization of the FBI. He expressed his fondness for the bureau and its mission, acknowledging the difficulty of his choice. Wray's seven-year term was set to conclude in 2024. Trump originally appointed Wray in 2017 after dismissing former FBI Director James Comey.

Wray's departure elevates Deputy Director Paul Abbate to acting director until a successor is confirmed. Abbate, a career official, had reportedly planned to retire soon. Meanwhile, Patel has been engaging with lawmakers on Capitol Hill, receiving a positive response.

Patel's extensive experience includes counterterrorism operations in the Middle East and the implementation of strategies against major terrorist groups. He played a role in missions targeting high-ranking figures in al Qaeda and ISIS, including Abu Bakr Al-Baghdadi. Furthermore, Patel contributed to efforts to bring terrorists to justice in the U.S. and secure the release of American hostages.

In addition to counterterrorism, Patel has been involved in strategies countering actions by China, Russia, Iran, and North Korea against U.S. interests, as well as implementing sanctions against these adversaries.

During the Trump administration, Patel served as a deputy assistant to the president and senior director for counterterrorism within the National Security Council. He also held a position in the Office of the Director of National Intelligence, supporting acting DNI Ric Grenell and former Director John Ratcliffe.
