Former President Donald Trump has reignited his playful yet provocative campaign suggesting Canada become the 51st state of the United States. In recent posts on his Truth Social platform, Trump shared images depicting a combined U.S. and Canada under a single American flag and the words "United States." One post simply stated, "Oh Canada!"
This isn't a new idea for Trump. He has repeatedly voiced this concept, including during a press conference at his Mar-a-Lago resort where he stated, "Canada and the United States. That would really be something. They should be a state." He has also claimed that many Canadians support this notion, citing trade deficits and the need for protection from potential threats posed by Russia and China as justifications for a merger.

Former Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, who recently announced his resignation, has firmly rejected Trump's proposal. Trudeau emphasized the strong economic and security partnership between the two nations, stating on X (formerly Twitter) that there's "no chance" of Canada joining the U.S.
Trump's recent actions extend beyond the 51st-state proposition. He has referred to Trudeau as "governor," threatened to impose significant tariffs on Canada, and even shared a manipulated image of himself standing atop a mountain with a Canadian flag. He has also revived his interest in the U.S. purchasing Greenland from Denmark.
